Q: Now theses are the questions that I like to ask. We are going to get a 6 month old who was 7lbs 11oz at 16 days, so we are thinking that she will be around 13-15lbs when we pick her up. Here's the big dilemma....Huggies #1's are for 8-14lbs and Huggies #2 are for 16-28lbs, but we really don't know how big she will be. Any suggestions or recommendations from the veterans???? Error on the smaller or larger? What have people found to be the average weight gain per month under the typical Chinese conditions???? HELP!!!!!
Thanks

Our daughter was 6 months old and about 13 pounds when we got her. She fit fine in Huggies #1, with plenty of space left. It seems that Asian babies have smaller "butts" than American/Caucasian babies, as Pampers found out when they started marketing their diapers in Japan, a few years ago. The Japanese mothers complained that the diapers were leaking, they did not fit at all. So, after researching, Pampers discovered that Japanese babies were built a bit different.
All other parents I have talked with have the same experience with sizes, in your case bring #1. (Now I hope she is not one of those few Chinese babies that look like 18 months at 6 months!!)

About diaper sizes - I don't know much about Chinese babies but with my biological son (now 2) I did have an experience with in-between diaper sizes. Our son was near the top of one range and at the bottom of the other. Every morning, when we would get him out of his crib, he had wet onto the crib mattress. I was breastfeeding him and one day I had to change my clothes 4 times because he kept wetting on me while he was eating. I asked my husband if this was normal (he has 3 adult daughters from pre-disposable diaper days). He said yes. Will, one day I bought the next higher size of diaper. Guess what? No more wet cribs and no more mommy changing clothes four times a day. Moral of the story -- when they get close to the top of the range go up a size with the diapers.

Here's what I did regarding the "what size of diapers" dilemma. I'd estimated that my daughter would be right in the middle between sizes, so I took the larger size. I also took a pair of plastic pants with elastic legs. I figured that if the diapers fit, I wouldn't need the pants. As it turned out, the diapers were loose, the pants worked great to contain any leaks, and we had no problems. Not even diaper rash.

" . . . I talked to several people who have infants in the 12-14 lb. range. Some used Size 1 and some used Size 2 (no help there). The ones who used Size 1 said that the diapers were a little snug, but they still had some left from shower gifts etc. and wanted to use them up (I understand that one, these things are expensive). The ones using Size 2 did not report any significant problems with leaks (but who knows how this translates to a Chinese infant). . ."
A: I would just like to add that in my experience, the shape of the baby matters more than the actual weight. My son was long and lean, and was able to fit into diapers considerably smaller than his weight would seem to indicate. My friends' grandson, on the other hand, was a roly poly little guy and was out of each size of diapers before he even reached the top weight.
