SphereGnome
is
a
theme for
the Firefox browser. It was
developed for the Phoenix browser (the predescessor of Firefox) by Ken Lynch from original
icons by Vadim Plessky. I liked the
theme so much that I took over maintaining and developing it when Ken
became overwhelmed by other events. If you have any
problems with this theme, contact me at edhumeRemoveThisPart@gmail.com
SphereGnome
is
a cool
theme with pleasant colors. The buttons light up when you pass over
them, and change color or change picture when you click on them. The
icons are 24x22 and 32x32, making the theme usable for
higher-resolution displays. It is also scalable, so if you set your
system font to 125% or even 200%, SphereGnome will expand with it. To get the
history of
pages visited,

After
starting work on SphereGnome, I created three new
themes based on the original. Depending
on your screen size, you can now pick from
SphereGnome
(normal), SphereGnome Big (150% normal), SphereGnome Jumbo (200%
normal) and SphereGnome XtraJumbo
(300%
normal).
SphereGnome Big is aimed
at small screens with high resolutions.
The button icons are sized at 32x32 and 48x48, with browser icons at
24x24 (Firefox default and regular SphereGnome have
16x16 browser icons). It is aimed at screen resolutions of 1024x768
through 1600x1200. Try this theme with a system font size set at 125%
to 150%. To get the
history of
pages visited,
right-click on forward or back arrow.

Version 1.0.1 - More hover states and cleaned-up button icon
images. Also, in some versions of Linux,
SphereGnome does
not skin the whole browser window. Version 1.0.1 fixes that.

SphereGnome Jumbo
is designed
for high resolutions and small screens, where visibility is a major
issue. The button icons are sized at 48x48 and 64x64, with browser
icons at 32x32. Try this theme with a screen resolution of 1600x1200 or
higher, with a system font size set at 150% to 200%. To get the
history of
pages visited,
right-click on forward or back arrow.
Install SphereGnome Jumbo 1.0 here.
Version 1.0.1 - In some versions of Linux, SphereGnome does
not skin the whole browser window. Version 1.0.1 fixes that.
The large icon images in version 1.0 are enlargements of bitmapped
images, and look somewhat rough when viewed at normal screen
resolutions. For version 1.0.1, I learned how to use Inkscape and
sodipodi, which are open-source
vector graphics drawing programs, and
went back to Vadim Plessky's original SVG (scalable vector graphics) files
and build new, clean bitmapped images.
There are also a number of new hover and active states.

INSTALLING A THEME from
disk:
Download a copy of the theme's file (it ends in the extension .jar) to
your harddrive. Then open Tools > Themes and drag the jar file to
the left pane of the Themes window. Click on Yes, and your copy of the
theme will be installed in Firefox.
IF YOU HAVE
TROUBLE INSTALLING A THEME:
Make sure you are using an up-to-date version of the theme, and an
up-to-date version
of Firefox.
IF you have an older version of
SphereGnome and are upgrading:
With version 0.9.7.7, I made some changes
with the directory SphereGnome is kept
in. If you
have installed SphereGnome
0.9.7.6 or
earlier, uninstall the
earlier version before installing the new
version.
Enjoy
these themes!
